Area H : 1996
We opened this new area to the south of Area F, above the smaller, southern Roman foundation. A wonderful cache of intact Crusader pottery of the 13th century AD and a less wonderful lime kiln quickly appeared, followed by a large N-S wall, which may be the temenos wall of the southern building--if indeed this too was cultic in function. Under the terracing connected with this wall, we discovered well-preserved early Roman house walls that had once been richly-frescoed, and a Roman mosaic featuring two fish and a trident. Further excavation to the west of the "temenos" wall revealed a massively-constructed stone chamber and a small doorway which lead us to suspect that we may be inside one of the towers of the town's seaward fortifications in Hellenistic times.
